Her Magic Moment: Selena Gomez
Over the course of an hour-long chat—in a midtown Manhattan hotel room with all of the window shades pulled down—there’s one topic to which Selena Gomez returns again and again: her fans. It was for them, she says, that she recorded “Who Says,” the sweetly upbeat first single from her forthcoming third album. “I just thought they needed it, because of bullying,” she explains. “I hope it inspires them to be who they are.” And it was those devotees—well, one tiny admirer in particular—who provided the impetus for Selena’s successful Kmart clothing line, Dream Out Loud: “It all started from a little girl saying that she’d picked out an outfit just like mine,” Selena says. (The collection, like her own wardrobe, tends toward the boho. “I like flow-y, open clothes, rather than tight-fitting,” she says, “although I’m getting a bit more confident in my skin.”) It’s not difficult to understand Selena’s regard for her audience: Without them, the Texas native figures, she’d never have been able to go from being a mere cast member on Barney & Friends to starring in her very own Disney Channel show, Wizards of Waverly Place. But as much as the eighteen-year-old enjoys talking about her fans and insists that they “always come first”—a genuinely earnest-sounding sentiment that oddly echoes the old business maxim “the customer is always right”—Selena doesn’t necessarily love it when others bring them up. “A lot of times,” she complains, “the paparazzi will try to use them. They’ll say, ‘Your fans want this.’ And it’s frustrating because my fans are amazing: They love me, they support me. And I do everything for them. But the press? They don’t care about me. They just want something on me that they can use. They just want to get that shot.” If she seems a little embattled—although not (yet) embittered—it might be because interest in Selena has spiked since she began dating Justin Bieber, aka America’s boyfriend. (In one particularly crazy incident, a picture of Selena hiding her face from photographers somehow sparked a worldwide rumor that a jealous Belieber had given her a fat lip.) But when she’s asked directly whether apprehension ever caused her to think twice about striking up a romance with her generation’s teen heartthrob, she says no. “I don’t like to let the attention on me become a factor in the decisions I make,” she says simply. Offered the chance to elaborate on the origins of their relationship, she demurs, as she has in the past: “We’ve always been friends.”
